What is an asset tag?

Asset tags are unique, identifying bar codes attached to furniture, devices, equipment, and other company assets which can be read and processed by means of a bar code scanner and associated asset management software. Usually attached in the form of an adhesive label (often made from laminated polyester, or anodized aluminium), these labels tend to be on the small side and unobtrusive, yet are often trimmed in a contrasting colour so that they can be swiftly spotted by someone actively seeking them out.

The bar code is integrated with an asset management program, which keeps a record of all the company assets. Accessed with a handheld scanner, this allows staff to monitor assets, and to record where they are at any given time.

The three main functions of an asset tag are:

Tracking equipment

Asset tags can be used to check tools or devices in and out from one site to another. This generates a history of movement, and confirms who was last responsible for a given asset.

Controlling inventory

Using the bar code scanner to read each asset tag, conducting a full inventory of company property can be accomplished in a fraction of the time.

Preventing Theft

An asset tag itself may deter some people from taking an unattended device. If nothing else, the asset record will indicate when it was last checked out, for liability purposes.
